Imagine wanting something your entire life. Stalking it. Trying it on. Dreaming about it.
Now imagine waiting 30 years for it.
My entire life, I have grown up in the shadow of my fashionable Mimi. You might remember outfit posts of the vintage sequin jacket she passed down and the fur vest she gifted me…but this outfit post MEANS SO MUCH MORE.
I remember being a young, budding fashion lover around the age of 5 and stomping around her house in high heels and this coat. Naturally, she would roll her eyes at me and say, “Maybe one day you’ll own a coat just as luxurious as mine.”
This past fall, Mimi did the unimaginable: She had my name monogrammed into the silk lining and gifted her prized possession to me. Stunned and shocked, I asked her how she could dare part with this treasure of 30+ years….she insisted that I would get much more use out of in than she ever could…and that the best place for me to get my mileage out such an extravagant piece would be this upcoming winter during Fashion Week.
And boy did I ever.
Saturday morning, while attempting to brave Snowstorm Nemo and its blistering temperatures, a street style photographer snapped a of me and gal pal, Shannon Yoachum heading into shows at Lincoln Center (and if you follow me on Instagram, you saw that this picture made it into Harper’s Bazaar street style looks….OMG OMG OMG). And then Sunday, while seeing a few last shows before heading back to Dallas, I threw the coat back on…and although I hated wearing it back to back days, it was just too darn cold to do without it.
Thank you, Mimi, for trusting me with such a special piece…your spirit was with me in NYC!

What a fantastic, heart-warming background story behind this fabulous coat! I am assuming “Mimi” is your grandmother? Nothing is more special than a hand-me-down. I am so so glad that you are rocking this beauty during NYFW!! She’d be very proud

You call you’re Grandmother Mimi. That’s cute. LOVE the coat!!! You need to take a pic of Mimi and post. I would also make sure you have LOTS of pics of you and Mimi. My grandma has been gone for along time. She was the best! I also really love that she passed down her coat. What a lovely tradition.

I must say I am very surprised that you would post about wearing fur considering you are close friends w/ Tara Harper. I can’t imagine how she would feel about that. I understand why it means so much to you, but it also saddens me that poor defenseless animals died for what you are wearing. In this day & time we live in, I am surprised by people who still consider animal skin/fur a part of fashion. I love your blog & think you are beyond beautiful & adorable but I’m sorry to say, this post will make me reconsider following your blog.
I love it!!!! I grew up in the age of Jackie K.O. All hats, furs and white gloves.
Over the last decade everyone and including most stars have been against Fur coats.. most celebrities have let that go to the wayside lately, I see. A lot. of Celebes and fashionistas have been wearing Real furcoats are beauriful thwt them not I have been passed down a beautiful full length mink coat and where it when it gets to be so cold only fur can keep a human warm. I did no comissiont the animal to be killed the fur coat was passed down to me. The animals were already dead and gone. so let their life not be given in vain. I wear the fur proudly as it was in my family’s name. as intended buy some to keep it’s beautifully warm. I would never purposely seek out to kill the weaker species. but these vintage for notnr pass in vain.
sorry for my auto correct on last post. very UN friendly
being from texas myself with a mama who worked for neiman marcus…. i GET the whole “fur” thing. ill tell you as i tell her… you don’t know any better. DONT WEAR FUR!
nice mimi story though… and it is a beautiful piece back in the day. now you have other options.
